If you were to ask anyone what their first thought that comes to mind when you think of Broomfield High School, most people would say sports.
Broomfield high school is an extremely sports originated school, with people transferring in from all around Colorado to participate in our sports.
But what if you don’t do sports?
Do you automatically not fit in and belong?
Multiple students who don’t participate in sports answered this question. Here’s what they had to say.
Alex Ellison (‘26) has attended Broomfield High school all four years. Although he doesn’t do sports, he keeps himself busy by “playing a lot of guitar and going to the gym almost everyday.”
Ellison said, “ I definitely feel like I belong at school; I have lots of friends who don’t do sports, and I feel like there are people who are all interested in the same things and you can connect with anyone really in your classes, not just if you do sports.”
Similarly, Cooper Norcross (‘27) has many hobbies that don’t include sports that keep him busy.
He said he “feels comfortable because of the fact that I have been attending Broomfield for three years. I feel welcomed and comfortable and everyone is very nice here.”
Cooper spends his free time in nature relaxing and meditating, along with going to the gym to feel confident. Cooper’s advice to younger classmates who also don’t do sports is to “not worry what others think and just focus on yourself. No one really cares if you do a sport or not, so just focus on yourself and don’t feel obligated to do a sport because you come to the Broomfield.”
Like Norcross, Mariah Wilson (28’) has not participated in sports during her time at Broomfield high school. “Fitting in is so easy at school, everyone is extremely welcoming. I feel like I belong because of all the love and support I get from the staff and my friends here at school,” Wilson said.
In her free time she prefers to travel, which is easily accessible with her schedule due to the fact that she doesn’t do a sport. “I will say it is somewhat hard to make new friends at school, just because people who do sports already have their friend groups, and I feel like people don’t open up easily. So if you have the chance too make really good friends your freshman year.”
Another student with similar experiences, Nat Lopez (29’), has never felt drawn to traditional sports, but has felt a strong connection with her love for marching band. She said, “I really enjoy doing band, and I know that isn’t a sport but marching band is almost like a sport. You have to do lots of exercise and I feel like it provides you with that team bonding you would get with sports.”
She said that everyone at Broomfield has multiple opportunities so it’s easy to fit in when you feel like it’s impossible to. She was asked if she preferred working in groups or alone and she said, “ I prefer working with groups. I feel like it’s easy to express yourself and to venture out rather than stay secluded.”
Sports don’t just define Broomfield as a whole.
Multiple students don’t participate in sports and find pleasure in other things, whether it’s theater, band, hanging out with friends, and more. Everyone has a spot in the Broomfield community where they belong.
Although it’s scary to be different from everyone else, find confidence in knowing that no matter what you will always belong at Broomfield.
