Winning Tradition

Here at Broomfield, throughout the years, winning is not uncommon. If a team is not successful, it’s something you don’t usually see. After all the years Broomfield has been successful starting in 1963 when we won our first state championship. Athletes from around the state and kids deciding between local schools have chosen Broomfield specifically for athletics. They want to join in on the winning tradition and be able to be a part of a state title and be competing at a high level. There is nothing better than walking into the gym for the state title assembly, where all your classmates are there cheering you on.

In 2014 the school joined the 5A classification, many didn’t know how the change would affect the school’s success. Right away, the first year Broomfield’s success did not fail. The boys soccer team started it off and won their first of back to back titles, followed by girls basketball winning the state championship at the Coors Event Center in Boulder.

Many kids transfer from other schools to come to Broomfield for the purpose of better sporting teams. Top class athletes pay attention to the previous year and want to come over and join the success. They have to pay the price and sit half the season but in the long run it is worth it. Kids want to be on the best team there is and they want to be coached by the best coaches.

Maddie Mooney, a transfer from Horizon, came to Broomfield to join the cross country team, “My family decided to move, and during the process I begged them to find a house in Broomfield’s range so I could attend Broomfield.” As the Broomfield Cross country team won state last year Maddie wanted to join and help them out even more, “I knew that they were a hardworking group of girls, and the majority of them were in my grade. I had also heard great things about the coach, and I needed to make a change.”

Some local high schools don’t have certain sports, so kids come to Broomfield to play the sport they love. One player, Tyler Lefkowicz, from Peak to Peak finishes his school day at Peak to Peak and drives to Broomfield for football practice. Many of his youth team friends play for Broomfield. “It is very overwhelming coming over from such a small school, to a fairly large school, to play arguably the largest sport in high school. It forces me to come out of my comfort zone. I’ve been extremely lucky that my teammates are so accepting and welcome me on the team and I am not excluded from anything the team does.” said Lefkowicz
