Thanks For The Memories

Chase Hull, Staff Writer

As this school year draws to an end, we may choose to reflect on the manifestations of our congenial affairs throughout the term, but are always reminded of the dreadful incidents which may have plagued us in its midst. In the past couple of months I have personally been affected by the loss of two old family friends that I have had the pleasure of knowing since before I can remember.

While I have not had any direct contact with either of them in recent years, I am still able to vividly recall the memories which I shared with them in my youth. I now realize that these memories epitomize how difficult it is to recognize the vast effect that seemingly minor relationships can have on your life, especially at a young age. The purpose of this piece is not to sadden, but rather remind myself and others how transient human life can be.

I can safely say I will never forget the late night Fourth of July festivities, or spectating my brother’s high intensity basketball games with such a spirited fan. I did not know either of these people exceptionally well, but in my impressionable juvenescence, they always made me feel truly close to them. There is still a hole in my heart when I think back to the time I spent with them, and my heart aches for the families involved.

Their names, best left unsaid, bring with them a dismal connotation, but they also remind me of the wonderful people I once knew. I have decided to live the rest of the year out for them, in order to perpetuate their well-deserved legacy. The cruel nature of both premature passings, occurring within a week of each other, have instilled a desire in my mind to treat everyone with a newfound respect and gratitude, for there may not be another instance where I’ll be able to do so.

I dedicate this post to them and all other loved ones who have been taken from us too soon. Knowing two people so radiant and full of life was truly a pleasure, although I wish I could’ve experienced their company more as I grew up. I encourage everyone, as summer encroaches on this diminishing school year, to reflect on those important to them and those who have made this year so special. Trust me, it’s worth it.
