Off periods are an important part of the school day because they give students extra time to focus on their academics, manage responsibilities, and take a break from the stress of a busy schedule.
Studies state that off periods give students more time to get homework done or for students to take a break from learning for a period. According to an article on Edutopia, “Research Tested Benefits of Breaks,” “[Students] spent over a quarter of the time distracted, unable to focus on the teacher or the current task. Shorter lessons, however, kept student attention high: Teachers found it more effective to give several 10-minute lessons instead of fewer 30-minute ones.” This states that the more free time students have to take a break or regain focus is better.
Staff and students at Broomfield High School say the same.
Henry Datz (‘28) said, “Off periods are a benefit because I get to sleep an extra hour every day because I have the first period off, which gives me more time at night to do homework as well.”
Research agrees. A The study addressed on Edutopia shows that “our brains aren’t idle when we take breaks—they’re hard at work processing memories and helping us make sense of what we experience.”
Mrs. Courtney, our librarian, said, “Off periods are really beneficial for students at Broomfield High School because our students are really involved outside of school.”
Additionally, Sarah Cordova (‘26) said, “My off period gives me time to get some of my homework done and take a break from learning every period.”
Overall, off periods give students an important chance to recharge, catch up on assignments, and prepare for future classes. Having this extra time during the school day helps reduce stress and allows students to manage their responsibilities more effectively. By using off periods wisely, students can improve both their academic performance and their overall well-being.
