This past Tuesday, February 7th, the boys basketball team celebrated their seniors at their game. Broomfield ended up with a win of 89-54 against Brighton High School, but the game was more than just a win to the team.
Family, friends, and coaches got to honor their seniors before the game with speeches, flowers, and posters.
However, when the game began, the spotlight was on Savion Martinez (‘23).
Martinez dislocated his knee cap a week before tryouts junior year, and wasn’t able to play the majority of the season. The injury only allowed him to play a few games on the JV team last year.
After he recovered and was getting ready for his senior season, the injury happened again but required surgery to fix it this time. While recovering a second time, he was the varsity team manager.
As senior night was approaching, Martinez was getting stronger and was able to run, jump, and shoot.
After months of working to get back to playing, Martinez was called out on the starting lineup as number 15.
Not being fully recovered yet, Martinez would be on the court for one play.
The game had started with Martinez on the court. He was passed the ball and went for a lay up. Martinez scored the first basket of the night for Broomfield, and his first basket of the season.
The crowd cheered loudly as Martinez was subbed out, and he ran off the court while hugging his coaches and teammates.
