Cheer Goes to State

The First Time for All

This past Friday, December 6th, and Saturday, December 7th, our cheer team participated in the state finals at the Denver Coliseum. After preparing all season, they took twelfth place out of twenty-seven in the 5A cheer division.

A couple of the stunts unexpectedly fell which was a small surprise to the team. After calculating though, Mia Zonies, 12, said that “the highest ranking we could’ve received was eleventh, so we were pretty happy with the results.”

This was the first year at state for everyone on the cheer team. Zonies said, “The experience was exciting and new. I didn’t know what to expect.”

Even though the first round of finals were on a Friday, the stands were still overflowing with Broomfield spirit. Zonies said, “All of the poms team went, a couple former teammates went, and my friends came out, too. I felt very supported.”

She said the best part was definitely “looking up at the stands and seeing all of the bright blue. That, and performing with my team.”

Though many teams finish their seasons after state competitions, cheer’s season will continue until after basketball season is over.

The team is also planning on going to Texas in January for nationals. A trip that is “definitely the best part of cheer season,” Zonies said. Though they took twelfth at state, the team is excited to see what they can do one last time at nationals this January.
