From Pressure to Perfection

Mrs.Trujillo Visits The Glass Beach

During the weekend of January 29th, Principal’s Assistant Heather Trujillo, visited one of the most beautiful, unique beaches in the world: Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, California.

Her trip to California was solely for the purpose of visiting the glass beach. “It wasn’t really like a beach. You have to climb down these big rocks to get down to it. It’s very rocky and there isn’t a whole lot of sand because it’s made mostly of glass. It was very pretty,” says Trujillo.

The glass beach in Fort Bragg, California was first born as an official water dump site in 1906, where early communities discarded their glass bottles, appliances and even old cars. “Trash and anything they didn’t want they threw over a cliff. During those years they had big bonfires to burn it down. In 1967 they stopped and cleaned up the beach, getting rid of all the iron and selling it to local artists for them to make things out of,” explains Trujillo. Over the decades, as scrap metal and and other items were removed, the pressure of the waves broke down the chunks of glass and tumbled them into small, smooth pebbles of glass treasure.

While some of us think we have to travel across the world to experience the beautiful places, there are some places right here in America that are worth making the trip for.
