A Different Perspective

The scent of the fresh foods, the whispers and yells among friends, and the sea of tables are only three of the many things that occur when I enter the realm of the cafeteria.

The Broomfield High School cafeteria is the hive for all walks of life in BHS to sit beside their friends and share more than just food. It may sound like a simple subject to talk about – why it is a room in which people may spend up to a half-hour catching up on their homework or preparing for their next test while chowing down on some of the school food.

Although some people think the cafeteria possesses too many problems to enjoy, I think many of us need to take a closer look. The word that drift around the cafeteria during lunch hours is that the food is awful, yet I believe that this statement is a little harsh for all the food that is served at the convenience of the students. If people go into it with an open mind and an open mouth, most of the food is okay if it is given a chance. If people listen to and follow the talk of the town, then I wish you luck in consuming anything out of the cafeteria…or anywhere else for that matter. The cafeteria food system tries hard to bring fresh and healthy food to the students of Broomfield.

The quality of the food is up for conversation, but another topic that needs to be highlighted is the service quality.  I always love to see the friendly faces that serve me my food. The ladies that work behind the scenes to provide for hundreds of students are always helping out with menu options and prices.

Most students love spilling the afternoon gossip onto the table alongside some food. The environment is overall a friendly one.  While the mood may be friendly, it could depend on the day, especially when both lunches combine on Wednesdays and Thursdays, increasing the cafeteria crowds by three-fold. One cafeteria goer said, “The [people] that might feel not safe there are the introverts…there isn’t any bullying that I see.” A sophomore, Gloria duMaine, said, “I would never get food from the cafeteria, it’s unhealthy, but the environment is overall safe.” DuMaine is always bringing her own lunch.

Many people enjoy the laughs and sounds of the cafeteria but not the food that it  serves. I think that if students are more open to the options and try the food with an open mind then there won’t be the misconception if the food is awful. If you go with what everyone else says, then you will miss out on not only the good food, but many opportunities to discover new relationships among our peers. Share some smiles and  Bon Appetite.
