Ruben Romero began his career at Broomfield High school with high hopes to lead our marching band to victory. In recent memory, the Broomfield marching band has taken the opportunity to delve into the competition of the Friendship Cup, yet in this time frame they too frequently came up short. However, this year was unlike anything we have seen before.

“When they were announcing scores, there was cheering by our group of fans when they announced last place and it wasn’t us,” said Mr. Romero, recounting the issues that we’ve had before. As the anticipation grew, waiting to hear the announcer call our name, Broomfield was finally announced – except this time, they were called last, meaning that Broomfield won first place.

Mr. Romero said, “A lot of people were surprised, so it was kind of cool.” Although many people were shocked but ecstatic about the win, Mr. Romero “expected them to win.” He said, “I have really high expectations for them […] the kids have a goal of being way higher in placements and scores this year, so they’ve been pushing really hard in their shows.”

Having worked at many different schools, and teaching band for over nine years, Mr. Romero said, “I love [Broomfield]. This is the hardest working group of all of my classes so far. [They] have been the hardest working students I’ve ever had.”
Mr. Romero’s ambitions for the band program are matched by the band members. “They’re totally steppin’ up and they are ready for it, keeping their goal in mind,” Mr. Romero said. Greatness is their goal and they plan on continuing their success throughout the rest of the year.
